Jennifer Lopez has officially initiated divorce proceedings from Ben Affleck.
The Hustlers actress has submitted legal documents on Tuesday, August 20, in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to reports from multiple news outlets, including the BBC.
As reported by TMZ, Lopez filed the paperwork herself, without the assistance of an attorney, a process known as “pro per.” According to Variety, she listed April 26, 2024, as the date of their separation.
The filed documents reportedly do not clarify whether a prenuptial agreement exists between Lopez and Affleck.
Without a prenuptial agreement, any earnings the couple made during their two-year marriage would be classified as community property.
Additionally, the documents indicate that Lopez has waived her right to spousal support and is requesting that the judge deny any support to Affleck as well.
Lopez and Affleck were one of Hollywood’s most prominent couples in the early 2000s, meeting in 2002 on the set of the film Gigli. Their relationship quickly captured media attention, earning them the nickname “Bennifer.” They got engaged the same year, but called off their wedding in 2004 and eventually ended their relationship.
In 2021, the couple rekindled their romance, leading to a Las Vegas wedding on July 16, 2022. They followed up with a more traditional ceremony in Savannah, Georgia, on August 20, 2022.
CNN reported that Lopez appears to have filed for divorce on the second anniversary of their Georgia wedding.
Rumors of a possible divorce had been circulating for some time, but nothing was confirmed until now.
This divorce will be Lopez’s fourth, following her marriage to singer Marc Anthony, while it will be Affleck’s second. His first marriage was to actress Jennifer Garner, with whom he shares three children.
